In the dazzlingly futuristic Washington D.C. of 2054, murder has been eliminated. John Anderton presides over the Department of Pre-Crime, wherein three "Pre-Cogs,"--precognitive humans drifting in a flotation tank, their brain waves tapped by computers--pick up thoughts of premeditated murder and warn the cops, who swoop down and arrest the would-be perpetrators before the killings can take place. Although the Pre-Cogs are never wrong sometimes they disagree. The dissenting Pre-Cog is said to have filed a minority report. If you could outsmart the Pre-Cog system, you would have committed the perfect crime. Bureau director Lamar Burgess tries to shield Anderton from bureaucrats like Danny Witwer of the Justice Department. As the pre-crime strategy prepares to go national, Witwer seems to have doubts about its wisdom--or he is only jealous of its success?

Add a CommentI had to check this one out again after reading the story it was based on. I only remembered not liking it that much but I thought it might be just my bias against Tom Cruise. After watching it again... I still don't like it very much. It's a good movie and the story is not bad it's just somewhat incomplete. My biggest problem is one that I had with many early Dreamworks pictures: they were so concerned with what great special effects they could stuff into the movie the story and acting take on secondary roles. Now, of course, that's the norm so I guess it was a groundbreaking film in a way...
While it is considered science fiction, I believe “Minority Report” also speaks of the unfortunate reality of our judicial system. In courts today, jurors are asked to participate in trials where the INTENT of committing a crime is judged. I have seen this movie several times and I highly recommend it.
I watched this movie many years ago and have been watching it once every few months. It is a really fine sci-fi futuristic movie. Plot is quite rich. It can easily be one of my favorite.
Another fine adaptation of one of PKD's short stories. Phil, you had the best ideas...
"You've always been nice to me. I'm giving you HOMETHEATER and a few minutes to play this very good movie." On the cover of this DVD it says "Two thumbs way up!" and i agree. I have this futuristic science fiction movie in my collection and you should too. There are some scenes that are "Sound Freak" worthy, but the movie consist of all around sound you will enjoy, with a good story and great special effects. One of my favorite scenes for sound is when Mr.Cruise is confronted by agents in a magnetic car factory. While fighting, he gets his hands on one of their guns. I love the sound this gun makes as he fires it. There is one other scene where Mr.Cruise's vehicle has been detected and he decides to leave the car while still moving on the highway. After he leaves his car, he stands on top of it just as it goes downward horizontally, while magnetically hugging the road. During this scene, i love the sound of the passing magetic vehicles as Mr.Cruise jumps from one vehicle to another. But this film's real strength is the story and characters. I'm giving this very good imaginary science fiction movie 5 stars!!!!! A very good story, very good visual effects, a good cast, and of course very good audio. A large pizza with pepporoni, sausages, ham, and extra cheese. Large root beer soda and buttered popcorn.
The highlight of this movie is the technology on display - it's coming, and it's definitely going to be an exciting mix of interaction and processing power. Back to the movie: The sci-fi parts are really quite good and this is probably Cruise's only good acting performance on record. The story moves along very well, and is very interesting too, not to mention well-written, compared to the average action movie. The only part that doesn't mesh completely is actually the way the Precogs sense the future, which brings a supernatural theme into the movie. Though the explanation is unsatisfying, just take it as part of the fiction of the movie and enjoy it anyway.
If I have to pick a favourite movie, I always say this. I watched this again a week ago to see if it was as good as I remembered. It was better. It's a mystery, a love story, a sci-fi movie, an action thriller, a horror show, an art film, and a timeless man-against-society thing. It's intelligent, meaningful, and visually spectacular without making a big deal of it. Don't be put off by Tom Cruise, he blends in perfectly.
Quite an interesting concept of the surveillance society. Typical fast paced movie that holds your interest with a good surprise ending.
Average film, but it is kind of interesting to see some of the allegedly futuristic tech that we have nowadays, touchpads just being one of them.
Average movie.
