Anne is prettier, more accomplished, and desired by many men. So when the King picks Mary as his mistress, Anne turns on her sister and schemes to become not only the King's consort, but his new queen. Though the Boleyn girls' mother points out that her 'daughters are being traded like cattle for the advancement of men,' it is Anne who ultimately throws her slight weight around to bully Henry into doing her bidding.

Summary
Add a SummaryThis movie was based on the best selling novel of the same name. A tale of intrigue, romance and betrayal. The Boleyn sisters are forced to advance their familie's position in court by seducing King Henry of England. In the process of helping their family , the sisters become rivals and much heartache follows. The era had no respect for women and the film is a strong reminder of the truth behind the seemingly over worked statement : " you've come a long way, baby"
Notices
Add a NoticeSexual Content: A brief scene where King Henry rapes Ann Boleyn/
Violence: I consider the abusive treatment of women in this film ( time period) a form of psychologically graphic violence.
Quotes
Add a QuoteSir Thomas Boleyn: "To get ahead in this world, you need more than fair looks and a kind heart."
Anne's mother:Observe the ladies of the court. See how they achieve what they want from their men, not by stamping their little feet but by allowing the men to believe that they, indeed, are in charge.
Katherine: You want me to creep away and become a nun? Well, i shall not. You want me to lie before God and admit that my first marriage was consummated? Well, it was not. You want me to retire and give up my daughter's claim as sole rightful heir to the throne? Well, i shall not. Not in a thousand years. Not if you rack me to within an inch of my life. I am Katherine, Queen of England..........
Katherine: So.......the Boleyn whores. Two former ladies of mine. What have did i do to upset you that you should turn against me like this? Anne: You failed to give England an heir. Katherine: And that upsets you so?

Comment
Add a Comment“The Other Boleyn Girl” is a story about ambition and how it corrupts. From what I saw and now read in the comments, it seems (as is usually the case) that the novel is better than the movie.
A sufficiently entertaining saga of King Henry The Promiscuous, and sibling rivalry taken to the extreme (with dire consequences). While Natalie Portman delivers an emotionally wrenching portrayal of Anne's dismal fate, her British accent was noticeably lacking. I also couldn't fathom Henry allowing himself to let her manipulate him so easily, jeopardizing so much for a roll in the hay. You'd think in those days, he would've just taken what he wanted. Oh well. It's a movie. Based on a novel. Not a history lesson.
Embarrassing bodice-ripper guaranteed to confuse anyone who doesn't know the history. Scarlet Johansson's idea of acting seems to be a single expression of sad confusion. BAD.
Tragic love story that takes place in sixteenth century England. Excellent acting. Recommended for history and romance buffs. Caution: graphic scenes of rape and beheading.
the book is much better. This movie does not follow the book at all. Plot is distorted and not good acting.
The book is so very much better, and it's just sad that the writers/directors didn't stick closer to the real book. This is just bad soapopera stuff... Not even worth watching for Ben's sake!!! :S
Could you be with someone your sister was with? Would you want to even if he was king & you had obessed over him?
As usual, the book was better.
i would strongly recommend that you read the book first
its not very historicallly accurate, and after watching the tudors, the performances there are a thousand times better than the perfomances here. the setting/costumes are brilliant, but performances have no soul. Though i can see how Natalie Portman really tries, this film feels like a stepping stone for her furture academy role win.
