… More »In the early 1930's, before Hollywood began enforcing a self-imposed Production Code, many films allowed for extraordinary frankness including nudity, adultery and prostitution. In this restored and remastered three-movie collection, three daring young actresses are featured in racy, riveting star vehicles. Jean Harlow is a red-headed secretary who hooks the company's married boss, while carrying on with chauffeur Charles Boyer. A young soldier is forced to give up Mae Clarke when his well-to-do family learns she's a prostitute, in Waterloo Bridge. Finally baby-faced Barbara Stanwyck sleeps her way up the corporate ladder in a New York bank, not caring who gets hurt.

Add a CommentThese are important movies to watch. Because of the Hays code movies made between 1929 and 1934 dealing with some difficult topics were sent to the vault and not seen again. After 1968 when the code was finally abandoned the movies where either forgoten or in such bad conditions that they could not be seen. Thank fully some have been restored and this great series has several of them including Baby Face with Barbara Stanwyck and an early version of Waterloo Bridge which is phenomenal. /// What sets these movies apart was the role of women and in particular of women of poor reputation or loose morals. Hollywood would not revist roles like these for women for another 35 years. A must see series. /// Also will get a chance to see John Wayne and Clark Gable in some early performances.
Though tame by today's loose standards, these 5 racy "Chick Flicks" from the early 1930s contain such taboo subject matter (considered very risque at the time) as - infidelity, promiscuity, child neglect, kidnapping, and ruthless business ethics (all presented from a woman's involvement in things)._____ The movies contained in this collection feature a number of young actors just starting out in their careers who would go on to become some of "Hollywood's Greats", like - Clark Gable, Humphrey Bogart, Bette Davis, Joan Blondell, Chester Morris and Norma Shearer._____ All remastered and filmed in b&w, these pictures have running times that range from 60-90 minutes._____ (*Note* - These comments apply to Volume 2. This impressive 4-DVD collection contains 6 first-rate movies from the early 1930s during the days of The Great Depression._____ With stories containing such "forbidden" subject-matter as infidelity, drug addiction, gangsterism, poverty, prostitution, and juvenile deliquency, these beautifully restored films were all directed by master filmmaker, William Wellman._____ 3 of my favorites from this collection were Heroes For Sale, Wild Boys Of The Road, and Other Men's Women._____ All filmed in b&w, none of these 6 pictures had a running time of more than 75 minutes.
Brilliant, I enjoyed all 3 films. I love this era of Hollywood films, enjoy.
