In a futuristic Los Angeles of 2019, detective Rick Deckard is a highly rated "Blade Runner" assigned to find and kill illegal cybernetic "replicants", genetic creations with superhuman abilities. Pulled unwillingly out of retirement, Deckard is forced into one last case, six exceptionally dangerous replicants who have escaped from slave labor and made their way into the city, apparently with plans to gain vengeance on the corporate masters who created them. In the course of investigation, Deckard falls in love with a beautiful woman who holds a disturbing secret, creating additional doubt and confusion in Deckard's mind. This 2007 "final cut" was remastered with improved visual and sound effects, and made some revisions to the 1992 "director's cut" revision.

Add a CommentA superior sci-fi flick/neo-noir from Ridley Scott. The terrific score by 'Vangelis' adds depth, drama. Rutger Hauer as "Batty" (appropriate) is evil incarnate. FIVE STARS.
Yet another contribution to the American cult of violence (no wonder we are so hated in Iraq and Afghanistan)! The violence in such movies as this is testimony to wide-spread sado-masochism in our strangely liberal but oppressive civilisation. For those who are not damaged: beware! Movies like this are bad for your psyche. Also, the movie, like the novel, has predicted badly. Los Angeles 2017 is not long away and so far looks nothing like this dark, cynical vision.
I always find myself revisiting this film and I don't know exactly why.
This Bubba-Louie guy wrote exactly this same comment on June 26 under a different name, something like ..."Spiffy." Well, the true value of a futuristic movie is its meaning, not the sound effects or how good the love story is. But Bubba didn't seem to have grasped the meaning of this very good movie, he only goes for entertainment, which is the superficial approach. This movie tells us that science is on the loose, it creates GMO foods, animals and humans, and the report of Bush Jr.'s "Bio-Ethics Commission" (Oct. 2003) declares that bio-technology will be used to create a genetically engineered new breed of working man. This movie is about that future, and the new type of human will be highly performant, peaceful, and without a will of its own. This is the only difference from the Replicants in the movie, who certainly have a free will, which will not be the case with the coming humanoid bio robots. All this is no fiction - I heard and recorded a program from the French broadcast of RadioCanada in Nov.2003, where a professor of Universite Laval said that bio-technology will be used to perfect the present emotional, animal-like man to turn it into a peaceful, performant and programmable bio robot. This kind of new man will gradually replace the present old-type of man. And the film "Blade Runner" says, truly, that those bio robots will be engineered for a limited useful life and they die off automatically, as the film shows us, when their usefulness is over. This is not "dark futurism" but the real future that is to come.
The look and feel of this film, even after 30 years, is amazing. The story idea, based on Philip K DIck's novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, is perfectly suited to the neo(n) noir, or future noir, style that is realized powerfully and impeccably, and was immensely influential on the visual sensibilities of generations of film audiences, and of artists, all over the world. Scott's own influences were above all film noir (pure mood, atmosphere, and story telling), but also the work of French graphic novelist Moebius (Jean Giraud). The novel had a certain poetics, but much more of a philosophic concern for hyperreality, the movie retains, and simplifies, some of the philosophy but brilliantly realizes a pure visual poetics all of its own. The film's cult status should not obscure the fact that it is powerful, enduring, and still looks fresh as a daisy,
I'm not sure if i ever saw this film before now, but if not, I was not missing much. It's basically a not so good detective film set in a futuristic setting.
Scientist creator .. "what do you want?".... Replicant (Rutger Hauer) ,.." MORE LIFE!"... this is a Great Sci-fi Classic Film.
I read in one of my many audio magazines that Mr. Ridley Scott was working on "Blade Runner". According this magazine, the remastered version was suppose to be clearer and have better sound than the previous edition. I was thrilled! I bought the original version and was very disapointed with the sound. My subwoofer did not respond to the old version and the sound was not placed in all my speakers. However!!!! This "Final Cut" version is WAY better and i tip my hat to you, sir. Looking at this master piece i was blown away!! After placing this in my DVD player i could tell by the menu this was something quite different. In the opening scenes of a city at night where large smoke stacks are releasing fire into the night skies was very clear. The sounds of the vessels flying towards the camera and leaving our sight was caught perfectly in my front and then suround speakers behind me while at the same time being able to hear approaching vessels in my surrounds as they fly past the camera into the city was equally magificent. I remember sitting there saying, WOW!! That sounds awesome!!! This version was perfect for HOMETHEATER. All my speakers, including my subwoofers were very active during this scene. And i can't forget the visuals that were eyecandy!!! Even the music filled my apartment with this amazing sound i have not heard before. Of course this version is part of my collection and i'm happy it is. 5 STARS!!! Excellent sound, excellent visuals. Two large pizza's with sausages, peperoni, and extra cheese. Rootbeer, coke, and pineapple.
I finally finished Blade Runner. It had to be most poignantly, beautiful, moving, movie I have ever seen. I loved it. Ridley Scott is amazing.
Saw this when it came out in the theaters and didn't really appreciate it until later. A powerful, dark, wonderfully acted film.
