Vampire Academy is equal parts Mean Girls and Twilight. It has a unique vampire mythos that will have you saying Strigoi and Moroi in your sleep. If you like laugh out loud dialogue, mysterious plot twists, campy high school melodrama, and strong female protagonists, then Vampire Academy is totally worth devouring in a binge read. I highly recommend it.

Vampire Academy is the first of six books in the Vampire Academy series. The six books in this series are; Vampire Academy, Frostbite, Shadow Kissed, Blood Promise, Spirit Bound and The Last Sacrifice. This is the prequel series to the Bloodlines series. These books are told from Rosemarie Hathaways' point of view. This novel is placed in a hidden Vampire world, from humans. In the vampire world there are Dhampirs; which are half humans/ half vampires. Moroi who are vampires that specialize in a magical element either fire, water, air, earth or spirit. The Dhampirs protect the Moroi from the Strigoi; which are evil, blood-sucking vampires who drink to kill. Dhampir's kill Strigois with a silver stake; which have all the elements in it except spirit, dhampirs put the stake through the strigiois heart, in order for them to die.

Rose and Princess Valissa Dragmor (who is the last in her royal line) have been on the run for two years. Lissa is a moroi and specialized in spirit she can heal living things. Rose and Lissa are best friends and have an un-breakable bound. When the guardians from St.Vladmirs find them, they return back to St. Vladmirs Academy- the place where they are in most danger. Lissa finds it hard to return her status. While Rose (a dhampir) trains with Dimitri Belikov to catch up on her training to become Lissa's guardian. While in training Rose feels something for Dimitri she tries to keep it from distracting her training.

This series is my favourite I have ever read. I recommend this book if your into the fantasy genre. This book shows that girls are equally as strong as boys, and that girls have power too.

I really enjoyed this different take on the "vampire" storyline. The writing isn't the greatest, but I was able to overlook that because it was still engaging.

25/5 - I've been looking forward to starting this for about a week, since I saw that it was my next available hold and it was ready to be picked up. I haven't read a vampire book in ages, more than a year and it's been even longer for a 'school book', not since I was in school a decade ago. This had better be great, the amount of anticipation and eagerness I've worked up, doing my best to hurry through Lessing's The Good Terrorist, if this doesn't blow my socks off there's going to be Hell to pay. To be continued...

26/5 - To start with I found Rose a little irritating and wasn't sure whether I liked her, but she grew on me as I continued reading. I love the trope of 'special girl who is extra special, even among her special community' and that's what I saw the plot of Vampire Academy as being. I didn't really understand why Rose made some of the choices she did, but I felt like she matured as the story went on (Jesse on the couch, that was way below her intelligence level). How on earth did she miss the signals between Christian and Lissa? She saw everything that the reader did of their interactions, plus she knows Lissa better than we do. How could Lissa and Christian's feelings for each other have been made any clearer to her?

Eventually she began to truly understand the responsibilities she would have to shoulder as the Guardian of a Moroi princess who has extra special talents. The chemistry between Rose and Dimitry wasn't particularly compelling to start with, obviously that's where things were leading but as with a lot of the plot, tension rose as the pages kept turning. I finished Vampire Academy in one night, so that's got to be some kind of indictment for others to read it (if I'm not the last YA reader in the world to read this series, that is). I will definitely continue with the rest of the series, as soon as my other library books will allow.
