Ultimately the plot just isn't involved or complex enough to make this a good film in my mind, but I was very impressed with the cinematography, set design & art direction, as well as music selection. The ambience and framing for the shots is excellent. The sequence at the voodoo chapel, the Roumfort, and the moments leading up to the arrival at the Roumfort are particularly well executed, and is what most fans of this movie find most memorable. For a movie that didn't have a big budget for the time period, they did a lot with the money they had. The writing had some strengths, too, and was fairly engaging, but overall the plot itself was just lacking in my estimation and really wasn't worthy of the care and attention that went into the making of the film. It's a shame they didn't formulate a much stronger plot in pre-production, and explore the characters more thoroughly because this could have been a really fantastic old flick.
