Shakespeare’s fair Verona is transported to a seedy Manhattan housing project where the reigning street gang of good Irish Catholics, “The Jets”, are preparing for a final showdown with rival Hispanic gang “The Sharks” whom they view as nothing more than a bunch of lousy Puerto Ricans. Complications arise however when former Jet and all-round nice guy Tony falls in love with Maria, the newly immigrated sister of Shark leader Bernardo. As tensions between the competing groups of hoodlums escalate Tony and Maria plan their escape; but fate deals the young lovers a nasty hand and tragedy is never far behind them. Winner of ten Academy Awards including “Best Picture” and “Best Director(s)” this rollicking musical is one of the most successful Broadway adaptations in movie history. Exploring such prickly (for the time) topics as racism, delinquency, and premarital sex, all that singing and dancing actually carries a surprising amount of dramatic weight. True to its theatrical roots, West Side Story’s muscular choreography and operatic performances are nicely showcased by gritty urban sets backlit in shades of red and blue; apparently a neighbourhood demolition in New York City was postponed for weeks so that the directors could shoot key scenes on location. And despite Natalie Woods’ horrible Spanish accent and the fact that few of the main actors could actually sing, the jazzy musical score still remains vibrant fifty years later while those beautiful classic songs are dubbed almost seamlessly. Loud and energetic with a heartbreaking finale, it’s Romeo & Juliet set to a bongo beat.

West Side Story won an Oscar for Best Picture. The story of two gangs facing off in a territory war to music, who would have thought that would be the makeup of a play. It works wonderfully though, and the songs are great. "Maria" is my favorite from the score. If you like musicals, then this is a great musical to bring home.

Best Picture of 1961 -- one of only a few musicals to ever win. This Blu-Ray disc is beautiful---shows the Chagall-like intense use of colour perfectly. The songs and dancing are always a treat, and, unfortunately, the anti-violence theme is still relevant. Enjoy!

I watched West Side Story at the same time I was in the middle of Bernstein's biography, which raised my appreciation of the genius of Bernstein's score.

SHRANK: ALL RIGHT WISE GUYS. NOW LISTEN TO ME, ALL OF YOU! YOU HOODLUMS DON'T OWN THE STREETS AND I'VE HAD ALL THE ROUGHOUSE I'M GONNA PUT UP WITH AROUND HERE. YOU WANNA KILL EACH OTHER, KILL EACH OTHER BUT YOU AIN'T GOING TO DO IT ON MY BEAT. ARE THERE ANY QUESTAINS? BERNADO: YES SIR. WOULD YOU MIND TRANSLATING THAT INTO SPANISH? SHRANK: GET YOUR FRIENDS OUT OF HERE BERNADO. AND STAY OUT.... PLEASE.

SHRANK: NOW LOOK FELLAS LET'S BE RESONOBLE. IF I DON'T GET A LITTLE LAW AND ORDER AROUND HERE I GET BUSTED DOWN TO A TRAFFIC CORNER, AND YOUR FRIEND DON'T LIKE TRAFFIC CORNERS. SO THAT MEANS YOU'RE GOING TO START MAKING NICE WITH THE PR'S FROM NOW ON. I SAID NICE, GET IT? BECAUSE IF YOU DON'T AND I CATCH ANY ONE OF YOU DOING ANY MORE BRAWLING IN MY TERRITORY I'M GOING TO PERSONALLY BEAT THE LIVING CRUD OUT OF EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU AND SEE THAT YOU GO TO THE CAN AND RUT THERE.

ANITA: I'VE GOT A MESSAGE FOR YOUR AMERICAN BUDDY. YOU TELL THAT MURDERER MARIA IS NEVER GOING TO MEET HIM. YOU TELL HIM THAT CHINO FOUND OUT ABOUT THEM AND SHOT HER! SHE'S DEAD

ANITA: BERNARDO WAS RIGHT. IF ONE OF YOU WAS LYING ON THE STREETS BLEEDING I'D WALK BY AND SPIT ON YOU!

The film opens in the streets of Manhattan in the late summer of 1957. There is a mounting tension set to music ("Prologue") between a white American gang, the Jets, led by Riff Lorton (Russ Tamblyn), and a rival gang of Puerto Rican immigrants, the Sharks, led by Bernardo Nunez (George Chakiris). The Jets harass the Sharks and vice versa, culminating in a free-for-all throughout the streets. Eventually, the Sharks catch the youngest member of the Jets, Baby John (Eliot Feld) on the playground. As they begin to "bloody" him, all the other Jets and Sharks rush in and start brawling. Soon, Lieutenant Schrank (Simon Oakland) and Officer Krupke (William Bramley[1]) arrive and break up the melee. Schrank orders the Sharks off the playground and the Jets "to make nice with them Puerto Ricans" or there'll be a price to pay. Once Schrank and Krupke are gone, the Jets discuss challenging the Sharks to an all out rumble that will decide who gets control of the streets. They decide to deliver the challenge to the Sharks at a dance later that night, because it is neutral territory. Riff also explains to the Jets that they have seen other gangs (the Emeralds and the Hawks) come and go, but the Jet members state that the Sharks are different compared to the other gangs. However Riff eases the statement, that no matter the odds or the situation the Jets will always pull through.
