West Side Story won an Oscar for Best Picture. The story of two gangs facing off in a territory war to music, who would have thought that would be the makeup of a play. It works wonderfully though, and the songs are great. "Maria" is my favorite from the score. If you like musicals, then this is a great musical to bring home.

Best Picture of 1961 -- one of only a few musicals to ever win. This Blu-Ray disc is beautiful---shows the Chagall-like intense use of colour perfectly. The songs and dancing are always a treat, and, unfortunately, the anti-violence theme is still relevant. Enjoy!

West Side Story is phenomenal. I cried so much, but the film is so well-produced! The dancing, the singing, everything! I highly recommend it for those who love musicals and romantic films.

I give 5/5 stars and loved every bit of it! It doesn't even feel like the movie is 2 hours and 32 minutes long.

Even though I'm not a big fan of this particular genre of film, I found West Side Story to be so impressively produced that it somehow transcended far beyond being just a mere Musical._____ West Side Story is literally bursting at the seams and filled to capacity with vivid imagery. This highly-energized film clearly captures the vibrant atmosphere of the late 1950s, where rival youth gangs get their prejudiced, little noses out of joint and prepare to rumble in the streets of NYC._____ With its memorable music and songs, dazzling choreography, striking sets, and superb direction by Robert Wise, West Side Story is truly a triumph on every level._____ A magnificent achievement, this film set a whole new standard (back in 1961) for modern-day movie Musicals.

I watched West Side Story at the same time I was in the middle of Bernstein's biography, which raised my appreciation of the genius of Bernstein's score.

The film opens in the streets of Manhattan in the late summer of 1957. There is a mounting tension set to music ("Prologue") between a white American gang, the Jets, led by Riff Lorton (Russ Tamblyn), and a rival gang of Puerto Rican immigrants, the Sharks, led by Bernardo Nunez (George Chakiris). The Jets harass the Sharks and vice versa, culminating in a free-for-all throughout the streets. Eventually, the Sharks catch the youngest member of the Jets, Baby John (Eliot Feld) on the playground. As they begin to "bloody" him, all the other Jets and Sharks rush in and start brawling. Soon, Lieutenant Schrank (Simon Oakland) and Officer Krupke (William Bramley[1]) arrive and break up the melee. Schrank orders the Sharks off the playground and the Jets "to make nice with them Puerto Ricans" or there'll be a price to pay. Once Schrank and Krupke are gone, the Jets discuss challenging the Sharks to an all out rumble that will decide who gets control of the streets. They decide to deliver the challenge to the Sharks at a dance later that night, because it is neutral territory. Riff also explains to the Jets that they have seen other gangs (the Emeralds and the Hawks) come and go, but the Jet members state that the Sharks are different compared to the other gangs. However Riff eases the statement, that no matter the odds or the situation the Jets will always pull through.

SHRANK: ALL RIGHT WISE GUYS. NOW LISTEN TO ME, ALL OF YOU! YOU HOODLUMS DON'T OWN THE STREETS AND I'VE HAD ALL THE ROUGHOUSE I'M GONNA PUT UP WITH AROUND HERE. YOU WANNA KILL EACH OTHER, KILL EACH OTHER BUT YOU AIN'T GOING TO DO IT ON MY BEAT. ARE THERE ANY QUESTAINS? BERNADO: YES SIR. WOULD YOU MIND TRANSLATING THAT INTO SPANISH? SHRANK: GET YOUR FRIENDS OUT OF HERE BERNADO. AND STAY OUT.... PLEASE.

SHRANK: NOW LOOK FELLAS LET'S BE RESONOBLE. IF I DON'T GET A LITTLE LAW AND ORDER AROUND HERE I GET BUSTED DOWN TO A TRAFFIC CORNER, AND YOUR FRIEND DON'T LIKE TRAFFIC CORNERS. SO THAT MEANS YOU'RE GOING TO START MAKING NICE WITH THE PR'S FROM NOW ON. I SAID NICE, GET IT? BECAUSE IF YOU DON'T AND I CATCH ANY ONE OF YOU DOING ANY MORE BRAWLING IN MY TERRITORY I'M GOING TO PERSONALLY BEAT THE LIVING CRUD OUT OF EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU AND SEE THAT YOU GO TO THE CAN AND RUT THERE.

ANITA: I'VE GOT A MESSAGE FOR YOUR AMERICAN BUDDY. YOU TELL THAT MURDERER MARIA IS NEVER GOING TO MEET HIM. YOU TELL HIM THAT CHINO FOUND OUT ABOUT THEM AND SHOT HER! SHE'S DEAD

ANITA: BERNARDO WAS RIGHT. IF ONE OF YOU WAS LYING ON THE STREETS BLEEDING I'D WALK BY AND SPIT ON YOU!
