This is an iconic book for a reason. It is a look at war from the soldier's point of view. If you are looking for tales of glory and honor, they are here but not in the way you think of it. It is more a story about the sacrifice of young men. I was a young teen when I first read this and perhaps one of the surprising things about this book is that it is written from the german perspective of WWI, perhaps one of the greatest things I learned was that the "bad guys" were human as well. Because in the end it doesn't matter. The experience, the loss of life, even for the survivors, is there. Everyone should read this book, the GI joe wannabe and the pseudo-intellectualist peacenik. Both stand to learn something from this book.
