The Iceman Cometh

Average Rating: 3.5 stars out of 5.
The Iceman Cometh
Random House, Inc.
The Place: Harry Hope's bar, a cheap gin-mill of the five-cent whiskey, last-resort variety situated downtown on the West Side of New York.

The Time: Salesman Hickey's birthday celebration, two days during the summer of 1912 -- a time when all tomorrows are forced abruptly to become today; when the delineation between hopes, dreams, and pipe dreams disintegrates; when "self-knowledge" destroys self-respect, compassion -- and life.

One of the last of Eugene O'Neill's plays, The Iceman Cometh stands today with Long Day's Journey into Night and A Moon for the Misbegotten as the supreme expression of his dramatic genius.

Baker & Taylor
This play by the noted American playwright about a salesman represents a study in understanding one's self

  • FVReader rated this: 3 stars out of 5. about despair! It's in every movement of this play.
Harry's bar & rooming house is the last stop for a rag-tag group of alcoholics. There's nowhere for them to go; they've reached rock bottom. As we hear of each of their pasts, it's so sad to know that their lives once held promise and it slipped away.
Along comes Hickey who tries to show them that they can break out of their pattern, return to their old lives. He tries to give them hope. But, even as they try, it's hopeless. How can one man make another man, who is wasted and has given in & surrendered to life, see opportunity?
This would be a good play to see on stage with the action and drama. It's a good play to read as well.
