I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book, the language was on the vulgar side (it was written from a the point of view from a soldier during Vietnam after all), but it really adds to the atmosphere of the book. The writing was average, but the overall story was great, and it really makes you think about the horrors of war.

A poorly written book with tons of vulgarity, profanity and violence: definitely not a mix that should be available for the impressionable minds of the young, right? Yet, this book is widely available in the Children and Young Adult (i.e., kids under 18) departments of libraries! Despite all that, this book has NEVER been banned in the US, despite what some would like people to believe…

This is definitely not a book minor children should read without their parents’ consent, therefore should be in the Adult area of libraries. Besides, the literary value of this book is non-existent. (So banned = challenged? Yup, in the world of the Thinkpol, for sure!)

FANTASTIC book. It gives the perspective of the Black-American in the war. Should be on everyone's pre-college reading list.

This book is EXCEPTIONAL! It is very well written. The dialogue is realistic. By the way, for those ignorant of the term, when it says a book has been "banned" it means that it has been "challenged" and removed from a site. It does not mean that you cannot get the book anywhere. And YES, it has been banned....AGAIN... I wrote, "CHALLENGED AND REMOVED"! In fact it has been challenged and removed from sites for the very reasons some have mentioned here. It has endured because it is so well written.
