This was one of my favourite books when I was younger and I still enjoy re-reading it as an adult. Eilonwy is the best.

A favorite from my own childhood, this series (The Book of Three is the first of five) became a repeated read-aloud with my kids. Wise and simple, witty and serious, the adventures of this particular Assistant Pigkeeper are beloved by our family members of all ages.

Reading this as a kid... what a great idea that was. As I got older, I became interested in the Mabinogion, the collection of legends and stories upon which Alexander's Prydain is based. But none of it ever delighted as much as these books. It's a fine series about growing up... it just happens to be in a place where there are 'Little People', fateful swords, plucky enchantresses, deathless warriors, exaggerating bards, and of course, Assistant Pig-Keepers. And if you practice your pronunciation from the guide in back, these make fine read-alouds, as well.

Fantastic series that still holds up well today. Manages to swerve away from certain cliches that tend to plague the fantasy-adventure genre. Definitely worth a read.

Readers who love contemporary fantasy series such as Eragon and Ranger`s Apprentice who are looking for another series to try may want to look at this classic series. This is the first book in the five book Prydain Chronicles and this series has been entertaining and enthralling young readers since the 1960`s. The books have lost none of their verve and are just as gripping and fun as when they were first published.

Book one in the Prydain Chronicles.
