Later, when his son, Billy, his neighbor Brent Norton, and he travel to the grocery store, strange things begin to happen. On their way to the market, they see the army, the local firefighters, and the police heading toward the mist. When he sees this, Brent mentions something about "Project Arrowhead," a secret military plan that no one knows about. When an elderly man runs into the market with a bloody nose, declaring that something is in the mist, the store immediately becomes besieged by otherworldly creatures which the shoppers and employees must battle.

as always, the book is better. if you still want to rent this movie, treat it like a b movie - the acting is laughable at times and the special effects are low budget. other than that, the ending of this movie does give stephen king's a run for its money.
Ok. This is going to be a tough call. I invited my friend over to watch this movie. She, like myself, is a sound freak and enjoys watching movies on HOMETHEATER. Now my friend is one of those kinds of people that love talking to the screen, as if the characters could hear her and take her advice. While watching the movie i notice she was a little quiet and to my surprise, she was asleep. Me, i like the idea of a mist contaning large insects and strange creatures. And it was interesting watching all the craziness inside the supermarket. But i just wasn't feeling this movie even though there was some cool scenes of large insect fighting with the people inside the store. I did wake my friend up and told her the insects were attacking people. She did watch it for a while, but soon feel back to sleep. Wow! I'll give this movie 3 stars. For an ok story, cool looking insects and creatures, and decent sound. listening to my friend snore------priceless. Popcorn and a comfortable chair.
Some of these people must be kidding, this movie is good and has one of the best endings ever!
The ending was horrible. The book by Stephen King was much better.
omg, this movie was awsome till the end. i hated the end, freakin' sucks! =)
A terrific movie. Must see.
Very enjoyable film. May not be to everyone's taste but it is easy to get caught up in the developing drama / horror.
This couldn't have been 'big budget', but what a big effect. If you like the escapism of sci-fi horror movies, this is one to definitely check out, take home, turn out the lights and find a blankie to hide under when you need to. DON'T HIDE AT THE END! Tip of the hat to Mr. King for this one and to Mr. Darabont for bringing it to life.
(JMC) If you watch The Mist (a film based on a book by Stephen King) at home with the same familiar familial distractions you watch your usual nightly tv shows - you may lose connectivity with the sheer horror it portrays in its characters' plight - and eventually come away feeling empty at its ending - but for all the wrong reasons. Watch it alone however, preferably in the dark, or with others but without plethoric interruptions - and I promise that you won't just dwell on fiction but on fright - real and unswerving - and you won't suffer disconnect at its Twilight Zone eerie ending - but experience more a hushed "Oh My God" silence of respect for the "what-if". I originally saw The Mist in a theatre - and I admit, I had the shakes after. Somehow it wasn't the same later, on home tv. In a big screen setting, it's just you and the other 'yous' in the audience. The movie can work its wonders far more effectively. Gone are the many miscellaneous miscues that materialize at home and tangent you away from the tension that grows in a well-crafted horror film. With just you and the characters and plot - you can't avoid the build-up - you just can't! And what a plot in The Mist: Nature versus Humanity - an insidious tale, wrought unwittingly by Humanity itself. Nature's outcry, a storm, has left behind the mist that now covers a part of Anywhere-USA. A group of people there find themselves ultimately trapped in a food market while the mist swirls ominously outside. Gruesome blood and gore evidence of anyone brave or foolish enough to venture out in the mist paralyzes the group with fear and leaves them quarrelling amongst themselves as to the nature of the threat - and the reasons for its arrival. There is also amongst them, a seriously disturbed but spell-binding religious zealot, who uses the Bible like a weapon to persuade the group to act according to her insane pronouncements. In an untimely twist, this extremely annoying character segues the movie into a morality play on religion, the last bastion of Man's hopes when in despair. However, the problem here is with the prophet. Religion, as preached by this false prophet becomes divisive and not inclusive, and turns out not to be the answer. Now splintered, the group is left once more to its own ingenuity in trying to deal with an increasing impending doom. How it does that - who ultimately rises to lead them - what choices they make that ultimately seals their fate - I'll leave for you to discover on your own. Between lots of bloody episodic confluences that turn on current world-wide issues run amok, like environment and politics, there is more than enough context in The Mist to lift it out of the realm of Stephen King schlock horror films and into the league of truly shock horror. So let me get to the ending - because in this bizarre tale of coincidences- nothing was more shockingly horrific, and therefore eerily satisfying, than the ending! I won't reveal the ending because Stephen King himself said that anyone who gives away the last 5 minutes of this movie should be shot! But seriously - unlike the kind of good denouement that ends with a cigarette in bed, this one is particularly perfect because it emotes a contradiction. There is a juxtaposition of several incongruous elements at work in those last 5 minutes that will leave you stunned with how they end. And like all great Twilight Zone tv episodes that banged away at the human condition until it cried "please... no more!" this Rod Serling-like ending will have you wishing for anything but, what you just saw - not because its stupid -but because it's stupefying!!! As a friend pointed out to me - it's the reason why totalfilm.com heralds "The Mist" ending as one of the greatest cinematic scenes of 2008: http://www.totalfilm.com/features/this-is-the-end#content
