I really enjoyed this as a child. My father took me to see this in the theater in early 1970's.

Main thing I liked about this version was that it was easy for me to hear what the actors were saying. The cast understood Shakespearean way of speaking. I also thought that the actors who played Romeo and Juliet were sincere and believable. Olivia Hussey who played Juliet won the Golden Globe award for new star of the year.

Released in 1968 to highly enthusiastic critical acclaim - This would be the 3rd time (but, definitely, not the last time) that William Shakespeare's world-famous tale of teen tragedy in the 16th Century would be brought, in all of its glory and splendor, to the silver screen._____ Directed by Franco Zeffirelli - This particular version of Romeo and Juliet is, without question, one of the most elegant and beautifully presented costume dramas ever filmed._____ When filmed, actress Olivia Hussey, as Juliet, was only 15 and actor Leonard Whiting, as Romeo, was only 17._____ Not only were the ages of Hussey and Whiting right in tune with the characters of Shakespeare's play, making the story so much more plausible, but it also generated genuine audience-interest from the younger movie-going crowd of the time._____ Romeo and Juliet is a truly wonderful film experience. This film possesses a fresh, youthful vibrancy that is positively and undeniably infectious.

You can find it available at most walmarts for $5.

I won't go into a long discussion here about the exceptional merits of this fine film production of one of William Shakespeare's most popular, romantic tragedies, but, I will say that this 1968 version of Romeo and Juliet was surely one of the best films in its genre.... Set in 15th-Century Renaissance Italy, this film, with its great attention to period details, was exquisitely photographed in and around Rome, and featured beautiful, Oscar-winning costumes by Danilo Donati.

Great movie, stays true to the amazing play. Phenomenal acting by both actors; I love Olivia Hussey! (: the whole story saddens me so much, but a definite love story to remember...much better than the modern version with Leonardo di Caprio & Claire Danes.
