Add a CommentA GREAT film!
I saw the unexpurgated version of this movie without the hypocritical digital figleafs which would probably have driven Kubrick to an even earlier grave. The film has a nightmarish quality as the Tom Cruise character wanders through an erotic, pseudo-pornographic Disneyland as a curiously passive observer. For me, the whole point of the film was to illustrate the deadness and joylessness of pornography. Our media is saturated with all aspects of sex presented as just another commodity in our profoundly commodified culture. The negative responses of other library members to this movie illustrates the essential boredom and moral hypocrisy of the revels portrayed on the screen.
This movie was such a disappointment , boring , unwatchable and just plain terrible and horrible more like horrendous so wish I never watched it. Don't believe the hype there is no sex of any sort and the plot is just plain stupid. No idea what the entertainment industry was going on and on about. It doesn't even deserve a star.
This movie was terrible. Dumb, Boring and Stupid Waste of time - Waste of Electrical power. It would be a waste of money to buy. On watchable best describes this movie. I fast forwarded all the way.
This is one of the worst movies I have ever seen!
I could copy britprincess1's review, but that would be plagiarism. Suffice to say that I agree with britprincess1's review.
One of the most Disappointing -Unwatchable films I’ve ever seen this year. Really a dumb movie. "I fast forwarded all the way." It would be a waste of money to buy.
Kubrick's final film. Those who love it revel in one particular scene involving a cultish sex club. But that scene is short and this film is long and not worth anyone's time. EYES WIDE SHUT is really terrible. It's like being smacked with a handful of symbolism, only to find that none of it means anything and the plot is broken all over the place. That's not to say that it's to be hated just because it's unconventional. Kubrick has always been one for smashing away at the norm, but other topics are more his pace, because sexuality is a topic about which he didn't have anything interesting to say. Time after time, he has tried to break new ground and succeeded, but his final crack at it crumbled into a mess. This film is awful and almost pretentious (profound without any substance). And its most creative element is pretty much the title. It's deceptive, too. The film is summarized as a "a dangerous season of erotic gamesmanship for both partners". And that is just a blatant lie. Bill (Tom Cruise) and Alice (Nicole Kidman) get top billing in this film, but that's a lie, too. While Bill is boring all throughout the film, always bordering somewhere between indifferent and jealous (which is a long range of emotions poorly acted by Cruise), Alice is barely in the film. Not once does she play erotic games; she has a moment of outspokenness where she reveals that she had an adulterous sexual fantasy that she didn't act on, but that's just the fuel for ... well, there isn't any fire. So it's just a lot of stinky fuel. Regardless, the film is awful. It's a mess. An awful messy wreck of a film. I do not recommend it to anyone. The only exception are those who idolize the Kubrickian canon, who wouldn't care that it's dressed-up excrement.
I enjoyed watching this film on my HOMETHEATER. There aren't many scenes for those that love sound, but it was interesting and different. I enjoyed the sounds and visuals of the "MASKED BALL". Dr. Hartford enters a room filled with men and women dressed in capes and masks as a blindfolded man plays some of the most unusual music i have heard on keyboards. In the center of this room is a man in costume with a staff tapping it on the floor in front of half naked women on their knees. The sound of the staff hitting the floor is very cool. This scene has great echo effects and i love the music. The song played during the orgy scene "MIGRATIONS" is awesome!!! The percussions and vocals are so cool i bought the soundtrack... Although i have not seen the "Unsensored version" i will soon. I give this movie 4 and half stars. For story, characters, and music that blew my mind. General Hso chicken with dumplings and chicken fried rice.
Not a very good film. Kubrick's other works are far better. Kidman/Cruise acted their roles well but the movie just does not add up.
