Werner Herzog, director of the 1972 masterpiece “Aguirre, the Wrath of God” starring the crazed Klaus Kinski, directed “Rescue Dawn” starring another intense actor, Christian Bale. This movie is based on the true story of Dieter Dengler, American pilot who bombed villages in America’s secret war in Laos, before America got into the Vietnam war. After he was shot down he survived time in a cruel and rough POW camp in Laos. If you are interested in seeing how prisoners of war survive under harsh circumstances, then this is for you. Maybe Cheney and Bush got some of their torture ideas from situations like this. Much harsher than the movie "Papillon" starring Steve McQueen.
Based on true events Rescue Dawn is the story of a Navy pilot shot down over Laos at the beginning of the Vietnam offensive. At the time these missions were black ops to destroy enemy supply lines. Taken prisoner Dieter Dengler endured severe treatment until he and several other prisoners were able to escape. Once out of the prison camp the jungle and enemy soldiers became the next obstacle. According to others below Deiter ultimately committed suicide. Other than the fellow prisoner who died while he and Deiter were in the jungle the movie did not mention what happened to any of the other prisoners that escaped.
WHAT A STORY ON HOW OUR PILOTS AND SERVICE MEN WERE TREATED BY THE VIET CONG. I ALMOST STOPPED THE MOVIE DUE TO THE INHUMANE AN TORTURE ENDURDED BY P.O.W.'S. WAS TOUGH GOING IN THE JUNGLE DURING ESCAPE. NEVER THOUGHT DIETER WOULD BE RESCUED. WENT ON TO BECOME A TEST PILOT. LATER IN LIFE, DUE TO A DISABILITY AND IN A WHEEEL CHAIR HE COMMITED SUICIDE AT A FIRE DEPT.
very good
Great movie based on true story. Werner Herzog made a great film with great actors and a great story! Funny, heartbreaking and scary! He hit all the emotions with this one.
WAR IS HELL,,,,, Very moving film,,, Extraordinary story of extraordinary people,,,, Great people make great efforts to live & live by.
Unbelievable crap to have to live through. Exciting, scary story. Comradery, hardship, triumph, opposition all in extremes. A solid viewing.
Interesting movie. I found it hard to hear what the characters were saying because of too much background noise. Also some of the characters were depicted in a less honourable way than was accurate. Movie should be taken with a grain of salt as most events are told exclusively by the 'hero' of the film before he commit suicide.
Excellent war movie and pretty good suspense, esp considering its a true story. Great acting as per standard Christian Bale.
