Mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fishes, and invertebrates are featured in turn, with the mammals receiving the lion's share of the space. An initial section is devoted to essays on characteristics and issues shared among animals, including classification, evolution, biology and behavior, habitat and adaptation, an d animals in danger. The drawings are particularly notable, filling the book with a wide array of species, displayed in two-page groupings. Boxes with "fact files" are included with the drawings which contain information on individual species, a distribution map, and statistics about the species' size, weight, habits, status, and preferred habitat.
