Wistfully romantic tale of 3 Irish college girls in the 50s. Minnie Driver carries the film as the plump, shy Benny, who to her astonishment (and everyone else's) wins Jack, the nicest, cutest boy at the school. Dark forces intervene of course, (or else there would be no movie).Benny's parents want her to marry a drippy accountant, and her social climbing friend Nan wants to make use of Jack for her own purposes. Still love conquers all, and the young Minnie Driver in one of her first films, positively glows.

I read the book "Circle of Friends" by Maeve Binchy during my early teens, but never knew the novel had been made into a film. Watching the film brought back so many great memories. Minnie Driver was an excellent choice as Benny.

A dated film about growing up in Ireland in the 50's for three girls, and their respective romance. There is a little bit of fairy tale in it. A feel-good, light-weight movie for the young at heart.
