The ballet, which begins at ca. 22 min. into the tape, is preceded by documentary material showing preparations for the performance: orchestra rehearsals directed by Igor Stravinsky ; a ballet class taught by Balanchine to cast members ; stage rehearsals in which Balanchine works with Govrin and Farrell ; conversations between Balanchine, Stravinsky, and Rolf Liebermann, intendant of the Hamburg Opera. The program also includes a brief discussion of the ballet's premiere by Serge Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, illustrated by still photographs.
