… More »Complete recording of George Balanchine's landmark ballet Apollo (Apollon musagète), made in Hamburg in 1966 for German television. The ballet, which begins at ca. 22 min. into the tape, is preceded by documentary material showing preparations for the performance: orchestra rehearsals directed by Igor Stravinsky ; a ballet class taught by Balanchine to cast members ; stage rehearsals in which Balanchine works with Govrin and Farrell ; conversations between Balanchine, Stravinsky, and Rolf Liebermann, intendant of the Hamburg Opera. The program also includes a brief discussion of the ballet's premiere by Serge Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, illustrated by still photographs.
