“She would be trouble, this one; the fact that he was lying awake now was proof of that.”
“Now it was just the two of us, Max and me. And about a thousand other people around us.”
“Curiosity is an addictive drug.”
“Nothing's going to happen to you," Max interrupted, gripping my shoulders and forcing me to look at him. "Because you're not going to do it. You're going to tell her to go to hell!”
“I loved voices, I always had. Words held meaning, but voices held emotion.”
" But that was when everything changed, and my plan of making it to the saftey of the mines disintegrated, like so many pieces of a writen promise set to flame."

Add a CommentCharlaine is a teenager that lives as a part of the upper lower class in this dystopian novel. The caste system is divided by what language you speak. Once you are born into a caste, you stay in that caste, unless you join the army. Charlaine can understand all languages though, a secret that her mother and father has encouraged her to hide. An easy read, with a little bit of romance. An unsettling ending, which paves the way for the next novel in the series.
This is one of the few books that surprised me with a fairly big part (Seriously Max?!?!) so that alone made me adore it. The only problem is it surprised me, and then that changed it into the basic plot of at least 3 other books I’ve read. Good thing is there were no side wars (I love you, so I have to be on your side even though I believe in what the other side is saying) so that again put it in my good graces I loved how she described voices and language and words, and in my opinion it was a very good book. It was bordering on the love/hate line, but Derting skirted it nicely (if very barely) into the love side.
I thought the idea behind this book was very intresting and had a lot of potential. However, I do wish the authour had gone into more detail about Charlie's journey and the world she lives in, which would've added more depth into the plot, making it a little more mature. In addition, the ending was a little abrupt, and left me a little dissapointed. However, this book is still a nice read, even though it bordered on a strange mix of elements from both children and teen fiction.
Is this the next big thing? Kimberly Derting might be anyways - her writing is beautiful, and the story progress quickly without ever lacking in the characters development. The Pledge is a strange dystopia, and hopefully future books clear up how we went from our tech-savvy world to magical queens (sorry if that's a bit of a spoiler). And come on - the cover is gorgeous! This is a book you can judge by the cover for sure.
I agree with Andesite; I loved the author's idea, but I believe she could have added more and broadened the plot line. When finishing this book, I felt "is this it?" The novel was too short, without fully exploring her dystopian world, and with a bit too much emphasis on romance. I felt that this book could have been much, much better, and that the author didn't stretch out all of her potential writing ability. Action was also lacking. Although slightly disappointing after reading this, I do recommend this as a light read.
This is definitely one of my favs!!! I love Max and Charlie! This is a MUST READ!
This was quite the book. The idea was great and could've been a huge hit except for the fact that i thought it wasn't well written. The way the romance was written brought the book down and tore it away from the larger concept of the book: Charlie and the oppressive society she lives in. The reason the Hunger Games is a big hit now is because Suzanne Collins knew that the action was too strong to add a overwhelming romance. So the love triangle was more to the side which i and many other people felt was perfect. Had Derting known how to balance the action and romance this would've been an amazing book. Overall it was an okay book, and you should try it.
Wow. This book is sensational. It is a very hard leap to make from Paranormal Romance novels like Kimbery Derting has done in the past, to a very science fictionny, almost Hunger Games Book 3 type of book. However, she was able to make the jump, while keeping everything that is her beautiful writing style. In past books, she has had romance, intense action scenes, and that touch of humor every book needs. She has very much done so to this book as well. I can definitely c this becoming a classic very soon. I give it 5 stars. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves Kimberly's writing or the 3rd book in The Hunger Games.
