APOCALYPTO ---- (DVD - 2007)(Mayan Languages) ---- Excellent Story and Acting ---- A Must see for those over 18 Yrs. ---- Enjoy! ---- RichardPaul (Finished twice 2014)
This is an amazing movie by Mel Gibson, I watched it one and would like to watch it again. ^^ Great image, great cultural interpretation.
One of my all time favorites. A very underappreciated movie. Just completely gripping and fascinating.
Spectacular, inspirational love story, effectively, with a clever turn of events from Mel Gibson. Personal b.s. aside, the man is talented. I have to compliment epic composer James Horner's (Titanic, Avatar, Braveheat, etc.) adrenalin-charged, heavily percussive score, as well. A wonderful, exciting adventure into the past. FIVE STARS.
A spectacular journey back through time to a point in history harkening the beginning of the apocalypse that consumed the magnificent (though ruthless) mesoamerican civilization. It's a grand adventure, and definitely not for the squeamish. I've never been much of a Mel Gibson fan but no one can say that, as a film maker, he didn't know how to light up the screen.
This was absolutely gripping. I thought it would be a bit of a novelty, a "nice try, but..." sort of film. I was on the edge of my seat for a lot of it - it's a long one but doesn't feel like it. The film is visually stunning, the acting terrific, and the story not as sentimental as I had expected. Well worth watching, as is the "making of" bonus feature, which talks about the costuming, make-up, and sets.
This is a strong adventure thriller, very well made and easily Mel Gibson's masterpiece. The violence may be a bit much for some, but it's integral to the period and the plot, and not in the least gratuitous - unlike Gibson's s&m-fest, The Passion of the Christ. 'Shame the guy's a boozer and seems to have lost his brakes (since his striking looks faded?). Hollywood could use more of this kind of risk-taking yet successful movie-making. Hope he's given the chance to show if he's got more such work in him.
This is without a doubt one movie for your HOMETHEATER. The sounds of the jungle in the beginning of this movie are excellent. My surrounds were filled with the sounds of forest creatures singing and running around in trees. This movie made it sound like my apartment was a jungle. Very nice!!! I also enjoyed the characters, even though i didn't understand their language. I didn't bother with the close caption and still was able to understand what was going on. The story was very good and the visuals were nice. Mel Gibson did a wonderful job making this movie and i give him two thumbs up. There were two other very good scenes for audio besides the jungle. The sound of the giant tree falling made my floor vibrate and when the main characters were takin prisoners, you can hear the roar of the crowd as if they were in your living room. I'm giving this movie 5 stars!!! For excelllent audio, very good story, heart felt characters, nasty bad men, and very good visuals. Lamb, pita bread, white rice, beans, and lemon aide.
this is a very suspensful movie that you wanna watch but at the same time you dont. a love story, a dangerous story to escape the aztec sacrifices to their so called god. still a movie to watch with some good popcorn :):p
Very good movie! Its unbelievable how good this one is. Surprises at every corner and shows the survival skills of one great man!
I'm surprised by all the positive reviews. I actually thought this movie was pretty bad. It's true that the Maya civilization practiced ritual human sacrifice, but they also did a few other things too. It would have been so cool if Mel Gibson had portrayed a range of truly fascinating aspects of the Mayans instead of just focusing on one really dark aspect of their civilization. Some of the scenes in this movie were so excessively graphic that the term "gore porn" comes to mind. The depictions of human sacrifice weren't even necessarily historically accurate, either; the large public ceremonies depicted in this movie were the M.O. of the Aztecs, not the Mayans. But in the end, historical accuracy was not the goal Mel Gibson had in mind when he made this gory action movie, and there are plenty of people out there who will enjoy this movie just the way he made it.
action packed movie i loved the story line
Not sure about the historical and cultural accuracy but a very good action packed adventure story. No more gory or violent than samurai films. No matter Crazy Mel's politics or personal life, he deserves credit for this entertaining film.
When a humble tribesman's village is attacked and taken prisoner by the Mayans (for use as human sacrifices), the man must try to escape and find his young family.
I really enjoyed this movie--an action/suspense-driven peek into Mesoamerican life before European contact; very good visual exploration of the ancient Maya urban civilization versus the jungle-dwelling tribes. Be warned: any movie that deals realistically with a culture that practices human sacrifice as an everyday thing is not going to be all fluffy-bunny. That said, not as gory as many of the popular horror flics out there, not really excessive. If you can deal with some bloodshed, it's a good movie to watch. (Edutainment?)
A very good film - I thoroughly enjoyed it. The acting and directing (Mel Gibson) was great. Music is by James Horner. I thought it was going to be a boring film about a guy being chased through the jungle, but it was actually an amazingly entertaining and thrilling journey! The entire film is in the Mayan language with subtitles. I definitely recommend this film!!
Hugely entertaining film, but truly meant for a big screen.
A violent but fascinating study of Mayan culture with layers of detail that enhance the experience.
Warning - don't read the back of the DVD case before you watch this film as it gives away almost the entire movie. This is a very good movie, and the VERY end is an interesting twist. Almost non stop action. I wished that the extras on the DVD would have given more insight into Mayan history / culture. I did enjoy the film quite a bit.
Must See - Apocalypto (2006) 139 min. Meg Gibson explores the world of the Mayans. He provides us with a film of fast paced adventure without losing touch with the characters; especially those struggling to survive. Heart-pounding action rarely gives up as the protogonist escapes from one situation to another. Though the film is a little over 2 hours, this film will fly by. Warning - extreme violence (what else is expected from Mel).
The movie is full of violence, there is no break from the tense emotions brought out by this film. If you can get over the violence, the story is very good.
Portrays the life and times of a young Mayan warrior on the eve of the Spanish Conquest. Filmed entirely in the indigenous language with subtitles--a technique that works just as well here as it did in "Dances With Wolves". Although it's no longer politcally correct to admire Mel Gibson's work, I found the film exceptional: well paced, well acted, original, and visually stunning--the best design and cinematography to emerge in ages. Especially recommended for anyone interested in Mesoamerican civilizations and weaponry, although viewers should be prepared for appropriate but frequent violence and gore.
